Question regarding Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises?

I just finished the fantastic novel but I am a little confused. How did Jake, Bill, etc. have enough money to pay for all their traveling and drinking?

Jake is a veteran of World War I who works as a journalist in Paris.
Bill is also a veteren.
