If you knew someone from your network could answer your question, would you email them direct?

…instead of posting your question on answers (it would save you five points, but they wouldn’t get any points for answering, if you follow my thought process)…

Yes, I have done that, and I’ve had people
ask me through e-mail.

It doesn’t matter or happen enough to bother me,
as long as It’s just once in a while, and I’m not bothering
the person, or they’re not asking me the same q. every
two seconds.. I don’t mind helping.. I feel appreciated when
they use it properly…(the e-mail function)…

If I knew that they wouldn’t mind, sure. If someone wanted to ask me a question via email, it wouldn’t bother me either. For God’s sake, it’s not supposed to be all about the points!

You lose the fun when you pose a question to one of those know-it-all people. Yahoo Answers is for fun despite some heavy questions going down. Reach out to the rest of the World and not just to the body with the big ear and bigger mouth.

If I know that someone is definitely a very knowledgeable person whose opinions can be trusted, I certainly would write to that person, whether s/he is on my contact list or not.
I have done this a couple of times and received useful replies too.
Of course it is always a polite practice to first ask that person if s/he would mind answering questions direct by e mail. Only if the reply is positive, should such a direct approach be attempted. There are people who either don’t like such direct mails or don’t have the time/inclination to reply. It is thus necessary to get prior permission.
One of my contacts was very nice. She not only agreed to answer my questions – I had a long list too – but immediately acknowledged my questions and asked for time to reply. I got very informative and useful answers over a period of 10 days, and I really appreciated that help.
There are also others who don’t reply to e mails asking them if they would respond to direct e mail questions.
It is not that people would do this to just ‘save’ 5 points by asking direct questions to another member. What here counts is the confidence one has in another member’s knowledge and positive answers. Points are not relevant when one needs to expand knowledge.

I normally ask opinion questions so probably not. If it was a serious question then I would still ask it here so I can give my contact/person from my network the best answer. I don’t mind giving up 5 point to give a friend 12 (10 for best 2 for answering) (well 13 possibly more have to count the thumbs up) . :o )
