Why did the tv series Rome cost so much money?

apparently I read on wiki that it got canceled because it cost so much, well why did it cost so much? Couldn’t they have cut back on the money they spent on it? Any info would be helpful, link too.

The sets were huge and elaborate, as were the costumes and the sheer number of extras.
